Facebook Places using Bing Maps

Facebook has launched 'Facebook Places' accessible and the new Facebook iPhone application touch.facebook.com site on your moblie device. Select the Places button, find the location where you are and check-in. Just like that, the check-in will flow to your profile on Facebook.com complete with a Bing Map, a pin of your location and any commentary you’ve added to your check-in.

Places also includes the ability to see where your friends have checked in, a link to get directions to a place (via Bing Maps) and a Like button for the respective place page. The place information bubbles up to the actual Places page which has a larger map experience, plus an update for you to see all of your friends who’ve visited that location. This means you can see where your friends are checking and discover new places.

Facebook Places Bing Maps

With 500 million users overnight have the ability to check-in to locations providing a wealth of information to you and your friends about businesses, common places to visit and who of your friends is going to the most random locations.

Greg's Cable Map

Greg's Cable Map is an attempt to consolidate all the available information about the World's undersea communications infrastructure on a Bing Map. The initial data for the map was harvested from Wikipedia, and further information was gathered by simply Googling and transcribing as much data as possible.

If you mouse-over any of the displayed cables on the map a brief description is displayed at the bottom of the map. If you click on the cable more details are displayed in the map sidebar and links are given to relevant websites.

Bing Maps - CachEye

Bing Maps - CachEye

CACH'EYE is a free personalised geocaching map service based on a Bing Maps application. Each user can define the content of his personal cachemap. Cache data are imported from Pocket Queries, from GPX- / LOC-Files or are exported from Geocaching Swiss Army Knife (GSAK) and visualised in an easy-to-use interactive map.

CachEye BING Maps OSM Layer
Clear, creative mapping for geocaches around the world.

Version 1.1 has many new features
  • Caches and additional waypoints now can be imported into the map directly from your Pocket Queries using the PQ-ZIP-File or still by using a GSAK-macro (as in V1.0), Up to 3000 caches plus waypoints may be displayed.

  • A single cache may be imported and visualized on the map via a GPX- or LOC-File.

  • Caches and additional waypoints now are associated to each other. With Focus/cache the map highlights and zooms to all waypoints of a specific cache.

  • ToDo-Lists assist you in quick and easy route planning. Todo-lists are named and you can maintain several lists.

  • Now you may move solved "Mysteries", "Multicaches" and "Other Caches" to corrected coordinates on the map in case you did not import this cache from GSAK.

  • Openstreetmap also can be used as the basemap.

  • Measure distance tool

  • Altitude display (approx.) in Cache/Waypoint/Marker Popup

  • Metrics (km/miles) may be changed in account settings / information.

  • Displays waymarks on the map for GSAK-based datasets

  • Invoke the "Log Your Visit" page directly from within the map

  • Better appearance on 800x600 screen resolution

Bing Maps Revamped

Bing Maps Revamped

The new Bing Map look, clearer (less clutter) make it easier to read and locate regions.

  • Cool colours visually recede allowing warmer overlays to come forward - An elegant backdrop for information delivery and helps content ‘pop out’ on the map
  • Road colour provides greatest differentiation scientifically from red, yellow, green traffic overlays.
  • De-saturation on zoom allows more continuous transition to photographic material (Aerial, Birdseye, Streetside) and allows user to focus on street level detail better.
  • Designed to work in black and white and to be differentiated by those with the most common forms of colour blindness
  • Crisp/easy to read font, larger font corresponds to larger roads
  • Lower cognitive load – Less  data / clearer details (loads faster)
  • Improved international coverage: Data updates deliver improved road and street detail across Central & Eastern Europe, Middle East, Oceania and Asia.
